Explore Sustainable Art Practices and Techniques
Beginning Art
Where creativity starts to take shape
In this course, students explore a wide range of materials—graphite, ink, watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media—while learning the foundational skills that every artist needs: drawing from observation, understanding color theory, exploring composition, and building confidence through creative risk-taking.
Students will keep a sketchbook throughout the semester to record ideas, experiment with techniques, and reflect on their artistic growth. Projects connect to personal identity, culture, and storytelling, while introducing students to both historical and contemporary artists who inspire new ways of seeing.
All Beginning Art students have the opportunity to display their work in The Bentley Gallery, participate in campus-wide art events, and contribute to our vibrant Visual & Performing Arts community. No experience is necessary—just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to try new things.
