Advanced Art Syllabus
Course Description
Advanced Art is a studio-based course for experienced art students ready to explore personal voice, advanced techniques, and professional presentation. Students will rotate through media stations (painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, digital art, and more), complete mini-lessons, and develop independent artworks. Projects must connect to quarterly themes and demonstrate thoughtful exploration of materials, subject matter, and presentation.
Grading Breakdown
- 40% Studio Hours (productive in-class time, logged and monitored)
- 30% Project Completion (minimum 6 projects per year)
- 15% Gallery & Event Participation (attendance + contribution)
- 15% Collaboration & Engagement (critiques, teamwork, campus activities)
Project Requirements
All students must complete at least 6 major projects throughout the year. Additional projects are welcome depending on your time management and studio focus.
Each project must:

Connect to one of the four quarterly themes

Be developed through a sketchbook proposal, including artist research

Use a medium or technique you’ve explored or are ready to advance in

Be prepared for display in gallery exhibitions
Quarterly Themes
Q1: Passage – Change, death, memory, legacy
Q2: Roots, Identity, and Bakersfield Culture & Community
Q3: Winter – Rest, Reflection, and Renewal
Q4: Spring – Rebirth and Becoming
Required Projects (At Minimum)
- One Anatomy Study
- One Portrait or Self-Portrait
- One Mixed Media Artwork
