A Collaborative Chalk Pastel Festival Project
You will be working in assigned groups to bring a large-scale design to life using chalk pastel on a 4 x 5 ft pavement square.
This project is inspired by the Italian street painting tradition and our local festival at the Bakersfield Museum of Art (Via Arte). Del Oro has proudly participated for the past four years—now it’s your turn!

Project Timeline
Wednesday, October 21 – Grid Practice
Learn and practice the grid method independently
Complete the grid worksheet
Create an 8 x 10 inch grid drawing
Practice and color your group’s design independently
Friday, October 23 – Group Planning + Practice
You will begin working with your group.
Task A:
Assign group roles and review expectations
Task B:
Practice drawing and coloring your full-scale design
Group Roles
Each group member will take on one of the following roles:
Project Manager – Keeps the group on task and manages time
Materials Lead – Collects, organizes, and returns supplies
Lead Artist – Oversees design accuracy and visual quality
Secretary – Documents progress and supports communication
Tuesday, 10/27 - Thursday, 11/5 – Final Via Dell’Art
Complete your final design on the sidewalk
Your work must be finished by the end of the period
⚠️ Incomplete work = automatic 0
Squares will be pre-taped by Link Crew
Your group must map out your grid before starting
Final Steps:
Keep your square clean and organized
Carefully remove tape when finished
Sign your artwork
Fall ARTBEAT Presentation
Your Chalkchella artwork will be displayed during Sunchella that evening.
Attendance is required (graded)
If you cannot attend, you must complete a written critique + reflection
