Elements of Art Review Project
Project Overview
The Elements of Art are the building blocks artists use to create artwork. In this project, you will create one cohesive image that is divided into seven sections, with each section demonstrating one of the seven Elements of Art:
Line
Shape
Form
Color
Value
Texture
Space
By the end of the project, you will have created a mixed-media artwork that showcases your understanding of each element while maintaining a unified composition.

Materials
12" x 18" drawing paper
Pencil
Black marker
Colored pencils
Colored construction paper
Glue stick
Liquid glue
Yarn and fabric scraps
Scissors
Elements of Art template
Project Setup
On a 12" x 18" sheet of paper, draw a 10" x 10" square centered on the page.
Leave a 1-inch border around the outside.
Trace the Elements of Art template to divide the square into seven equal sections.
Outline the sections with black marker.
Directions
Step 1: Create Your Design
Lightly sketch a single image or subject that extends across all seven sections.
Draw only the contour lines at first.
Fill most of the composition space with your design.
Step 2: Line
Demonstrate the Element of Line.
Divide this section into at least six smaller areas.
Fill each area with a different zentangle pattern.
Experiment with:
Thick and thin lines
Curved lines
Straight lines
Zig-zag lines
Organic and geometric patterns
Step 3: Color
Demonstrate the Element of Color.
Use colored pencils to create smooth color gradients.
Inside your subject:
Use cool colors (blue, green, purple).
Outside your subject:
Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow, pink).
Fill the entire section.
Step 4: Value
Demonstrate the Element of Value.
Choose one:
Option A
Shade your subject realistically using pencil.
Option B
Create a value scale within your design that transitions smoothly from light to dark.
Step 5: Texture
Demonstrate the Element of Texture.
Use yarn, fabric, or other fibers to create actual texture.
Attach materials with liquid glue.
Explore contrasting colors and materials.
Fill the entire section.
Step 6: Shape
Demonstrate the Element of Shape.
Create a geometric paper mosaic using cut pieces of colored paper.
Glue pieces neatly with a glue stick.
Keep spacing consistent.
Avoid overlapping shapes.
Use contrasting colors to help define your image.
Step 7: Space
Demonstrate the Element of Space.
Create depth through overlapping.
Include at least one object that appears in front of your design.
Include at least one object that appears behind your design.
Use layering to create the illusion of foreground, middle ground, and background.
Step 8: Form
Demonstrate the Element of Form.
Use a medium of your choice to make your subject appear three-dimensional.

Shadows
Shading
Depth
Volume
Focus on creating the illusion that your object has height, width, and depth.
