“Your Story, Your Voice, Your Pages”
What is a Zine?
A zine (pronounced zeen) is a small, self-made book where you have complete creative control. There are no rules, no limits—just your ideas, your style, and your voice.

Zines are often:
Personal or expressive
Handmade or digitally designed
A mix of images, text, collage, and design
A way to tell a story, share ideas, or explore a theme
This is your final project, and it should represent you as an artist.
Essential Questions
How can I communicate ideas through both images and text?
How does layout and design impact storytelling?
How can I use materials and techniques to enhance meaning?

Learning Goals
Develop a cohesive visual theme
Explore mixed media or digital techniques
Demonstrate creativity, craftsmanship, and personal voice
Apply elements of art & principles of design
Project Overview
You will create a multi-page zine that explores a theme of your choice.

Format Options
Handmade (paper, folded, stapled, stitched, etc.)
Digital (Canva, Procreate, Photoshop, Google Slides, etc.)
Step 1: Brainstorming (Required)
Before you begin, complete a brainstorm to develop your idea.
Brainstorm Activity: Mind Map
Start with your name or a central idea in the middle. Branch out with:
Interests (music, hobbies, aesthetics)
Personal experiences
Emotions or moods
Social issues or topics you care about
Artists or styles you like
Then answer:
What do I want people to feel when they read my zine?
What visuals match my theme?
What colors or materials fit this idea?
👉 Final Step: Circle your strongest idea and write a 2–3 sentence concept.
Step 2: Plan Your Pages
Your zine should include:
Minimum: 6–8 pages
A clear theme or concept
A mix of:
Images/illustrations
Text (poetry, captions, storytelling, quotes, etc.)
Thoughtful layout/design
Step 3: Create Your Zine
You may include:
Drawing, painting, collage
Photography
Digital design
Found materials (magazines, fabric, etc.)
Handwritten or typed text
💡 Think about layering, composition, and visual flow from page to page.

Step 4: Final Touches
Clean craftsmanship
Strong composition on each page
Intentional color choices
Clear connection to your theme

Display Options
Your zine will be:
Displayed open to your strongest page OR
Available for viewers to flip through
Copied for sharing in the gallery
